Original Game System: AD&D and d20
Publisher: TSR and WoTC
The Forgotten Realms was originally (and still is) a home-brew setting developed by the Canadian author Ed Greenwood. It became TSR’s official game setting in 1987 and has remained very popular ever since. It’s in many ways more “high-fantasy” than the Greyhawk? setting and it’s definitely even less structured than Greyhawk. Very varying cultures exists side by side without any apparent explanation.
A lot of material has been published for the FR setting making it easy to use with other rule sets. However one does need to incorporate a decent magic system for wizards – the sorcery system that ships with RQ III fails miserably in FR.
